The Author's Corner: Education

What is education? Is it going to school and learning from a teacher? Is it what we are taught or is it what comes from life experiences? Who’s education system it the best?

In the beginning our education starts at home when we are growing up. We learn how to walk and talk among other things before we are shipped off to school. In school we learn the lessons that are important for a developing mind. As we move through our school life we are taught how to function in society. We are given lessons that will help us to make choices about our career.

That is the school system, it has changed over the years as society has changed. What was important twenty years ago is now out of date and taught in history class.

The hardest lessons happen after the school years are over. Our life starts to happen, and we are tested before learning the lesson which is different from going to school. The lessons are hard and when you must live the test before you learn the lesson. Who can you trust? Who are the right people to be around? I ask that question because most people do not show their true colours. Someone may be nice to you only because they are benefitting from you and then when that benefit ends so does the relationship.

Some people trust to much and after that trust have been broken, they no longer trust again. This is a learnt thing and the old saying is not to trust anyone as far as you can throw them.

The difference of being educated and street smarts is that to get an education you are taught the lessons and well the less, street smarts come’s from life outside the school.

In today’s world so many people look at what they can get out of another person. There are no true friendships where there is just respect for each others lives and enjoying each others company. Everyone is on social media and base their lives from the amount of likes the get. The world I grew up in is long gone and my education is out of date.

Today I often wonder where this new society will go. As there are those who think that this world is better than it has ever been, I beg to differ. I ask why I see in this world where history is always repeating itself? Has the education system failed the youth? I do not think so because the first lessons are learned at home. Thus, how is the first years until kindergarten take place in the care of their parents will determine the outcome of the child.

I learned at a young age that if I wanted something I would have to work for it. I learned many lessons from my parents and siblings. Children learn how to act from their parents or the lack there of. If there is only one parent in the household, the lessons that are being taught are going to be different than if there is both parents in the house.

For some kids, going to school is a safe zone for them. For many reasons this is a fact. It comes down to the way they are treated as this is not the educational system that has failed, it is society’s that has failed.

Today both parents have to work to make a living for them and their children and the children are raised by someone else. Thus, there will be a generation of children who need to know the most important lesson and that is the love from their parents.

Stay safe.
